We're talking the OTHER headline story: what I might call the CORmageddon!
Not to downplay the seriousness of the Coronavirus, but let's face it, all this hoopla with misinformation may be as dangerous as the disease itself.
Here are the facts from the guy we HOPE knows what he's talking about: the Surgeon General of the United States, Jerome Adams:
Because COVID-19 is a respiratory disease, there are basic public health measures that can limit its spread. Washing hands frequently, staying away from sick people or staying home if sick yourself and covering your cough or sneeze.
The special N95 surgical masks are not recommended for use by most Americans and hoarding of masks can actually hurt our response by reducing the supply available for medical professionals who need them.
And, to add, Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University, says if it's a regular surgical face mask, it won't help ward off the virus.
3. Finally, there have been many comparisons of coronavirus to flu. Getting your flu shot not only decreases the likelihood you will get the flu but preventing the flu can support our response to COVID-19. Community capacity to respond to COVID-19 will be all the stronger if we prevent excess seasonal flu cases through higher flu vaccination.
